In today’s environment where hackers, scammers and identity thieves are trying to steal your personal information, it is important to take steps to help protect yourself.  Please review these simple steps that you can take to safeguard your confidential information.

Computer Security

  • Use up to date security software and look for a program that updates automatically.
  • Set your web brower and operating system to update automatically.
  • Research a company’s website credentials so you know who you are actually dealing with.  Are you on the company’s “authentic” site or a copycat site?  When visiting a new site, use your search engine to first review the company and any complaints or scams related to them.
  • If you  must give out personal information online, make sure the websites are encrypted.  Look for https (the “s” is for secure) on every page.
  • Always protect your passwords and do not use the same password for multiple accounts.
  • Back up your files on a removable device or external hard drive.
  • Make sure your hard drive is removed or clean of personal information before disposing of it.

 Laptop Security

  • Never leave your laptop in your car or unattended no matter where you are, even “for just a second”
  • Pay attention to your surroundings
  • Set a login password and use encryption to protect sensitive data
  • Always protect your passwords and do not use the same password for multiple accounts.
  • Back up your files on a removable device or external hard drive
  • Choose an inconspicious carrying case
  • Use a laptop lock, cable or alarm
